What could be the lessons of the Ukraine conflict for German and European politics? On the backdrop of deep divisions in Germany and the EU over an appropriate Russia policy, the article discusses three options. A policy of appeasement and détente aims at a balance of power among the great powers at the expense of smaller states. A realist policy builds upon containment and deterrence. According to the most radical approach, a change in Russia’s foreign policy is dependent on regime change in Russia itself. Key for this to happen would be the success of Ukraine’s transformation.
